In an interview with the Clarín portal, the boxer confessed that a decade ago the recognition of the people was a headache: “At times, the media explosion was very hard, unbearable. When I was here, I wanted to go back to my Madrid because there I have my anonymity, I lead a very normal and calm life”.
Regarding his new steps in the profession, he pointed out that “I see it as a new career because it really is. Another is my body, another is my mind, another is my thinking regarding boxing. I look more inward than backward or forward and try to live in the present. I am enjoying the present in a wonderful way, as I have never done in the 19 years of my previous career.
This return had its first milestone on August 21, 2020, when the former super welterweight and middleweight world champion defeated the Spanish José Miguel Fandiño by technical knockout in the seventh round in Torrelavega. He was followed by wins against Finn Jussi Koivula and Britain’s Brian Rose. The last challenge, so far, was victory over another Briton, Macaulay McGowan, whom he outpointed after knocking him down twice in a convincing performance.
Without considering a break, Martínez announced that “I plan to return to training in a week. In each place I go I will take my time to train and thus not lose my physical condition. I will be in permanent contact with David Navarro, my trainer. I can box, I will, but the important thing is not to lose this physical condition. I will try to schedule a fight for the last 10 days of May or the first of June and another one for the end of September or the beginning of October. From there, I will point everything to the world champions.”
In the list published on January 31, Martínez appears fourth in the ranking of the middleweight division of the World Boxing Association, which recognizes Japanese Ryota Murata as super champion and Cuban Erislandy Lara as regular champion, and which considers the mandatory challenger British Chris Eubank Jr (son of the notable middle and super middleweight champion of the 1990s), who until August was considered interim monarch.
A unification duel between Murata and the Kazakh Gennady Golovkin, champion of the International Boxing Federation, is planned for the end of March or the beginning of April. Meanwhile, the American Jermall Charlo is the owner of the 160-pound belt of the World Boxing Council and the other American, Demetrius Andrade, of the World Boxing Organization.
“I have to keep an eye on them. Everyone is a possibility”, warns Maravilla, without looking at his 47-year veterans.
