How long do Bundesliga club fans have to wait on average before the referee finally whistles a penalty kick in their favour? The Statista graphic shows which club is most often allowed to score a penalty.
FC Bayern fans in particular are regularly told that their club has a twelfth man on the pitch in the referee. It is often said that the team is “dizzy” and that the referee is particularly generous in their case with awarding penalties. An analysis by the CIES Football Observatory has shown that FC Bayern is actually one of the Bundesliga clubs that has received a penalty most frequently since the 2018/19 season – namely roughly every 466 minutes or every fifth game.

As the infographic shows, however, there are two clubs in the Bundesliga where penalty decisions are made in their favor even more frequently. At both Borussia Mönchengladbach and RB Leipzig, the referee whistles for a penalty every 397 minutes. True to the saying “3 corners, a penalty” corresponds to about 4.4 games for these two clubs to go to the point.
The clubs with the longest average waiting times in the league are FSV Mainz 05 (974 minutes), Bayer Leverkusen (824 minutes) as well as VfL Wolfsburg and Hertha BSC (each 765 minutes). On average, the Mainzers wait almost three times longer for the mercy of the referee than the foals.
