First bad pass, then grätsche
Hummels had practically initiated his dismissal with a catastrophic wrong pass. When Bilbao striker Maroan Sannadi stood freely in front of the goal, the former Dortmund knew how to help himself other than with a tackle.
Referee Clément Turpin reacted immediately and sent the central defender after the foul with smooth red from the field. Particularly bitter: Hummels had not been taken into account in the previous three games in the Europa League.
Nico Williams (45.+3/82. Minute) and Yuri Berchiche (68.) Mercilessly punished Hummels’ Bärendienst. Leandro Paredes’ (90.+3) Connection hit by transformed penalty was late. The team of coach Claudio Ranieri won the first leg 2-1.
