Figure skating at the Olympics: A talent of the century makes history

The team from Russia won the first gold medal in figure skating at the Beijing Winter Olympics. For the second time after the triumph in Sochi in 2014, the Russian athletes prevailed in the team competition, clearly ahead of the teams from the USA and Japan. As at the summer games in Tokyo last year, the Russian athletes will not compete under the Russian flag. Russia itself is excluded from the games after several doping scandals, the athletes compete under the abbreviation “ROC”, which stands for the “Russian Olympic Committee”.

Above all, Kamila Valiewa shines. The 15-year-old wrote Olympic history with her freestyle program. She was the first woman to show two quadruple jumps at the Olympic Games – and stood them.

Most demanding short program in Olympic history

In addition, Valiewa showed the most demanding short program that the women have ever seen at the Olympic Games. The exceptional talent delivered a flawless cascade of sensational jumps: a triple armpit, a triple flip and a combination of triple Lutz and triple toeloop.

The Russian team was able to claim the top three places in all four disciplines of the team competition and dominated the events on all three days of the competition. There was only a moment of shock during the freestyle of the pair skating world champions Anastasija Mischina and Alexander Galljamov. In a spectacular lifting figure, they both fell. The couple was able to finish the freestyle and won gold for the Russian team.

silver and bronze

Silver in the team competition went to the USA. In the ice dance, the Russians, spoiled by success, had to settle for second place. American dancers Madison Chock and Evan Bates won by a point ahead of the pair from Russia.

Bronze went to Japan in the overall competition. In the Japanese team, 18-year-old Yuma Kagiyama excelled in particular, winning the men’s freestyle.

Germany did not qualify for the freestyle final of the top five teams and finished ninth overall. After the positive corona test of the Berlin pair skater Nolan Seegert, he could not compete with his partner Minerva Hase.
