Handball Bundesliga introduces goal line technology

The goal line technology has been around in football for a long time. Now the frequently discussed introduction also becomes concrete in handball. The technology in the first division is available for the new season.

After lively discussions in the past, the goal line technology will be introduced for the next season in the handball Bundesliga. “I can confirm that we will introduce this in the first division for the coming season,” said league boss Frank Bohmann at the request of the German Press Agency. Previously, the “picture” had reported and referred to the decision at a presidium meeting.

By decision, the league wants to further improve the quality of the referee decisions, as Bohmann said. According to information, the introduction of the new technology costs 500,000 euros. The league boss did not want to comment on the specific sum.

There are already video evidence

There is currently a video evidence in the league. But it is not applied when making decisions as to whether the ball is behind the line, because cameras are not attached in the goal and at the level of the goal line. In the past, the technology has been used in the past in the final 4 tournaments in the DHB Cup.

The introduction had already been discussed again last year. In December there was a controversial scene in the Bundesliga top game between SC Magdeburg and the Füchsen Berlin: After 31:31, the Berliners had no understanding that a goal from Lasse Andersson had not been given. Due to the lack of goal line technology, the referees had made a factual decision and did not give the gate.
