Olympism broke another barrier and for the first time a woman will preside over the IOC

The former multimedallist nader of Zimbabwe, Kirsty Coventrywas elected this Thursday as the tenth president of the International Olympic Committee (COI), making history like the First woman and the first African to lead The World Olympic Movement.

The election was held by secret vote among more than 100 members of the IOC during the 144th session in Greece.

Coventry, 41, who won the vote in the first round, will officially assume the position after June 23, to replace Thomas Bachwho has presided over the committee since 2013.

Coventry’s presidency is scheduled for an eight -year mandate, with the possibility of requesting an extension of four years.

Born in Harare, Zimbabweon September 16, 1983, and former Olympic swimming champion, Coventry is one of the most awarded athletes in Africa, having won seven Olympic medals, including two gold. He has been a member of the IOC since 2013 and also presided over the agency’s athlete commission, where he played a crucial role in the defense of the rights and well -being of athletes.

As the youngest of the seven candidates, the Coventry campaign for the presidency focused on modernize the Olympic movement, Strengthen the participation of young people and strengthen the role of athletes within the COI decision -making processes.

It has also highlighted the importance of Digital transformation In order for the games to be more accessible and relevant to the younger public, as well as sustainability efforts to ensure that Olympic Games remain environmentally and financially viable.

Coventry served as Minister of Youth, Sports, Arts and Recreation of Zimbabue since 2018, where he has focused on developing base sports initiatives and strengthening opportunities for young people from all over the country to participate in sports.
