Hennig and Carl Stark at probably last Johaug-Gala
As expected, the winning streak of the German cross-country skiers at the World Cup final in Lahti ended in the last distance race. Nevertheless, the runners go from winter with a good feeling.
Cross-country skiing icon Therese Johaug has crowned her last race with her 50th World Cup one victory. At the World Cup final in Lahti, Finn, the Norwegian delivered another gala in the mass start race over 50 kilometers in the classic style and won 1: 03.03 minutes ahead of her teammate Astrid Oeyre Slind after a 38-kilometer solo. Third, the Swede Ebba Andersson was 3: 28.1 minutes behind. Johaug took revenge for the not perfectly run home world championship.
The team sprint Olympic champions Katharina Hennig and Victoria Carl were not able to continue the winning streak of the German cross-country skiers in Lahti as expected, but once again demonstrated their belonging to world class. Hennig took fifth place, Carl was eighth. In the overall World Cup, she took second place behind the American Jessie Diggins and finished third in the spacer rag.
“The second overall rank of Victoria is historical for us, because you have to be ahead in many competitions. Not only in the distance area, but also in the sprint. If you do it and get overall, you are deservedly one of the best in the world,” said national coach Peter Schlickenrieder in ARD.
However, he also emphasized that the team had to struggle very much at the World Championships in Trondheim and that not all expectations were met. “Maybe we will be more lucky at the Olympic Games next year,” said Schlickenrieder.
Before the final 50-kilometer race, Coletta Rydzek won the Sprint and together with Laura Gimmler the team sprint at the World Cup final. It was the first two World Cup victories of the Oberstdorfer.
