How can a suit be compliant one day and not the next? The German ski jumper Katharina Althaus is extremely unhappy about her disqualification in the mixed competition. A former national coach is even clearer.
After her disqualification in the Olympic mixed competition, ski jumper Katharina Althaus also expressed her disappointment on social networks. “160 World Cup starts, five World Championships, three Olympic Games: And now I’ve been disqualified for the first time. My heart is broken,” wrote the 25-year-old Althaus on Tuesday night on Instagram.
Her jump in Zhangjiakou on Monday was not counted because the suit was too big. Mixed world champion Germany was therefore eliminated after one round. In a first reaction, she attacked the world association Fis on Monday: “You have destroyed women’s ski jumping with it. Our names are all there now and we have pulled the arse card. This destroys nations, funding and the whole sport unfair.” In addition to Althaus, four other jumpers from other nations were disqualified because of their suits.
After the end of the disappointing competition, the jumping quartet Althaus, Selina Freitag, Constantin Schmid and Karl Geiger had a photo taken of them standing arm in arm in the direction of the Olympic facility. Geiger wrote: “We stick together, no matter what.” In the years 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2021, the German mixed had won the world title. This time favorite Slovenia prevailed and became Olympic champion.
Former national coach: “It was a disaster for our sport”
Meanwhile, the former women’s national coach Andi Bauer has expressed severe criticism of the International Ski Federation (FIS). “It’s a disaster for our sport,” said today’s member of the materials commission and the jumping committee of the FIS in an interview with the “Stuttgarter Zeitung” and “Stuttgarter Nachrichten” (Tuesday). Four world-class athletes were literally presented in front of an audience of millions. “This is not how a sport should present itself on the world’s largest sporting stage. That was a scandal,” Bauer reprimanded those responsible.” Crouching in tears and completely distraught in the finish area – the athletes don’t deserve such pictures. And neither does our sport. That was a huge loss of image,” said Bauer.
The 58-year-old, who had celebrated many triumphs with the German ski jumpers during his time as national coach from 2011 to 2021, is now demanding consequences. “If the measurement method changes, teams and coaches have to be informed beforehand. If I disqualify so many athletes at the Olympic Games and expose them to arbitrariness, then I didn’t do my job properly beforehand. Something like this must never happen again in the future,” said farmer.
