After three defeats at the start of the 2010 semi -final series between the Vienna Captials and the Black Wings, the Linz were 0: 3 before the fourth game and stood with their backs to the wall. For the first time in the history of the domestic ice hockey league, the Linzers succeeded in what no one had thought possible: they won four times in a row and still moved into the final. This series was later to go into the league history under the terms “Re-Sweep series”, “Wunder von Linz” or “Wonder of Vienna”. Even in the NHL, this has only happened four times to date. There are also series in Finland, Switzerland and Slovakia in which this hussar piece has succeeded.
After three victories in a row (first Vienna, then Linz), the decisive game in Vienna-Donaustadt went on March 23, 2010. For the Capitals, the home right spoke 7000 loud fans and the somewhat higher individual class. The shape and, above all, the fact that Linz showed such a high resilience in the games before that should have the pendulum knocked out in favor of the Stahlstadt.
From the archive – that was the OÖN article on game 7 back then:
The start of the game like a roller coaster ride and summarizes the series again: Vienna took the lead 2-0 after 6 minutes. But Linz struck back and took the lead 3-2 until the 18th minute of the game. But Vienna met again in the first section – and so it went 3: 3 into the first break.
In the second third, the Linzers were able to decide the game in their favor: Up to the third end, they moved to 5: 3, in the 42nd minute Rob Shearer managed the preliminary decision with the 6: 3. After the consequence of the change of goalkeeper at the Viennese, the 7: 3 by Martin Grabher Meier followed. Vienna no longer recovered from this, although Marcel Rodmann was able to do result cosmetics with two goals in the final minutes. The Black Wings moved into the final against Salzburg.
The Upper Austrians took the swing of the semi -final series with them and won twice against the favorite Red Bulls. Then the strength went out and you had to give up in six games of superiority from the Mozart city.
