Neuendorf proposed for second term as DFB boss
After many years of crisis, a little calm has recently returned to the DFB. Bernd Neuendorf is now to continue this course. The Bundesliga is also campaigning for this.
Bernd Neuendorf faces a second term as President of the German Football Association. The regional and state associations of the DFB and the German Football League (DFL) proposed the 63-year-old for re-election at the Bundestag on November 7 in Frankfurt/Main, the association said.
Neuendorf took over the top office in March 2022 and thus succeeded the interim tip duo Peter Peters/Rainer Koch. The former journalist and SPD politician had only had to face the preliminary round of the men’s selection half a year later.
“Neuendorf held what he announced”
In the meantime, Neuendorf has led the DFB into calmer waters after years of crisis. “Neuendorf kept what he announced three years ago. He is a president of the entire German football, he has put football back on football, the basis and top were brought together again,” said DFB Vice President Ronny Zimmermann in the association’s message. Under Neuendorf’s leadership, the association consolidated personally and structurally. The mood at the base had “changed significantly”.
Neuendorf’s desired candidate for the office of treasurer, Stephan Grunwald, was also nominated for a second term by the regional and state associations entitled to propose.
Approval also from the DFL
“Since Bernd Neuendorf was elected president in 2022, the DFB has successfully reorganized and has developed economically positively both in terms of sport and close cooperation with Stephan Grunwald,” said Hans-Joachim Watzke as spokesman for the DFL Presidium and other DFB Vice President.
The very trusting cooperation between the DFB and the DFL as the umbrella organization of the Bundesliga clubs has continued to grow. The ratio was long considered difficult.
Neuendorf can now even be elected for four years: from the upcoming Bundestag, the election period is going one year longer.
