Eisenbichler celebrates and sees world record: “Was my life”

Markus Eisenbichler celebrates his farewell in Planica. A crazy ski jumping season ends spectacular. The processing of a scandal continues.

The spectacular world record flight show by Domen Prevc pursued Markus Eisenbichler with sunglasses and a can beer in his hand. At the foot of the huge ski jump from Planica, he fell into his arms on the second day of his big farewell party and was happy with them. The Bayer reviewed his successful ski jumping career at the 254.5-meter record of the Slovenian Prevc and third place by teammate Andreas Wellinger.

The Springer, called “Eisei”, who enjoyed his last flights in the second place in team flying on Saturday, pushed a few tears. “At the moment it is hard for me and very emotional – because that was my life what I did there,” he said in the ARD.

Eisenbichler: “I’ll miss it – miss incredibly”

The 33-year-old had celebrated extensively with numerous friends the evening before and drank one or two more beer “than was actually planned”. With a view to the ski jump circus, he said: “You are just a big family. I will miss it – miss incredibly.”

The fact that the cohesion of this large family has recently crumbled heavily through the suit manipulations of the Norwegian team was at the background at least for a short time at the season final.

Farewells and the impressive flight from PrevC, which replaced the Austrian Stefan Kraft as a record holder, were the focus. National coach Stefan Horngacher spoke in view of the gripping competition of “Great advertising for our sport”. However, the scandal is far from over.

Not only Eisenbichler stops

While the processing continues in the background, a crazy winter ends for the German jumpers, which follows a change. In addition to the six -time world champion Eisenbichler, Stephan Leyhe also stops. Other top performers such as the three-time Olympic medalist Karl Geiger (32) and Pius Paschke (34) are also already in higher ski jumping age.

Paschke was the big surprise of the first weeks of the season. The oldie of the team won five of the first eight individual World Cups. With the yellow jersey of the overall World Cup, he traveled to the four -hill tour. There, however, neither Paschke nor his teammates met the expectations. The victory of the Austrian Daniel Tschofenig, who also won the overall World Cup, could not even endanger a German jumper.

For three months, the eagles of the German Ski Association in the World Cup did not make it to the podium. At the World Cup in Trondheim, Wellinger won the only medal for the German men’s team with silver from the normal hill.

Does Wellinger still get World Cup gold afterwards?

The title fights were headlines due to the conscious suit manipulation of the Norwegian hosts. A total of eight Norwegians were disqualified. This included world champion Marius Lindvik, teammates and supervisors.

Further subsequent disqualifications could follow. Not to rule out that Wellinger is still learning about World Cup gold on summer vacation-namely when gold winner Lindvik is also taken out of the rating for the normal hill.

New rules are also filed. The provisions should become more strict and transparent. The ski jumping world is fighting against the loss of credibility triggered by the scandal. Manipulation should be impossible.

Search for young German world-class jumpers

And sporty? There is also a lot of work waiting for Horngacher and his colleagues. Even if it looked a little better towards the end of the season: the question of new guarantors of success is becoming increasingly urgent. In addition to the 24 -year -old Philipp Raimund, who did without flights of altitude in Planica due to occasional fears of height, no younger jumper really squeezes into the absolute top of the world.

Eisenbichler will initially follow all of this from a distance. At some point he wants to try it as a trainer, but not immediately. “I just need rest. I need a distance from ski jumping,” he said.
