World champion Mats Hummels announces career ends in emotional video

Mats Hummels ended his career after this season. This was announced by the 36-year-old soccer world champion from 2014 on Instagram. “After over 18 years and so many things that football gave me, I will end my career this summer,” said Hummels in a video message when many moments of his career were recorded. “When I see it all, I know more how much this whole trip, all this way meant to me, how unusual it was to be able to experience it.”

Hummels became German champion and three times DFB Cup winner with FC Bayern and Borussia Dortmund. Most recently, the central defender played for AS Rome, but was no longer part of the regular formation. His contract ends in summer.

The long -time international celebrated his greatest success in 2014 with the world championship title in Brazil. He headed the 1-0 goal in the quarterfinals against France, previously he had already hit Portugal to 2: 0 in the 4-0 opening success. He scored five goals in 78 international matches. He was denied the title in the Champions League, in 2013 he lost 1-2 in the London Wembley Stadium in the final with BVB 1-2.

In his video he showed himself very moved. “I’m fighting with the emotions. Now the moment comes that no footballer can get around,” he introduced the message. He then gratefully looked back on his great career. “It is very easy to do the right trainers at the right moment. Be fit at the right moment, the right players at the right time.” He will miss the big stadiums and the fans like on the Dortmund south grandstand: “It was wonderful in front of such scenes to be able to play in front of the fans, and I will be missing, I will be missing.”
