The media learned about the ISU initiative to raise the age limit in figure skating

The Council of the International Skating Union (ISU) has submitted to the organization’s congress in 2022 a proposal to gradually raise the age limit in figure skating from 15 to 17 years old. This was reported on February 9 by Match TV.

It is clarified that the proposal was formed on the basis of data received from the ISU medical commission.

“The ISU Board has concluded that, in order to protect physical and mental health, the most necessary change will be to gradually increase the age limit from 15 to 17 years of age. This gradual introduction will allow skaters to adapt to the new restrictions and avoid that skaters who have already competed at the senior level will be forced to return to juniors.

So, the council proposes to raise the age limit to 16 from the 2023/24 season, and to 17 from the 2024/25 season. As in the current rules, the skater must reach the required age before July 1 of the current year.

Earlier, Norway came up with the initiative to raise the age limit in figure skating (in single disciplines – from 17 years old, in doubles – from 16 years old). The ISU Congress will be held in June 2022 in Phuket.

In December 2021, it was reported that the Russian Figure Skating Federation would fight to maintain the current age limit.

On February 7, the Russians won the team figure skating tournament of the Olympic Games – 2022 in Beijing. Olympic champions were Mark Kondratyuk (men’s single skating), Anastasia Mishina and Alexander Gallyamov (pair skating), Victoria Sinitsina and Nikita Katsalapov (ice dancing), Kamila Valieva (women’s single skating).
