From Linz’s junior marathon to the Olympic Games

Julius Rudorfer (5th VL) and Julian Mesi (6th VL) got to know each other twelve years ago and dueled for victory at the starting line of the junior marathon in Linz.

One day before the elite will attack the route record at the 23rd Oberbank Linz Donau Marathon, more than 2,000 children are in the spotlight again on Saturday. Fired by thousands of parents and other spectators, three -year -olds take their first sporting steps and compete with each other. “Promotion of young people is very important to us. We are also a marathon for the future,” says Günther Weidlinger, organizer of the Linz marathon.

“Today we are best friends”

With the event at the Linz railway bridge, not only children are enthusiastic about sport. The junior marathon is also partly the starting signal for successful careers in athletics and friendships.

Julius Rudorfer (18) and Julian Mesi (17) grew up in St. Oswald near Freistadt or St. Thomas near Waizenkirchen – and thus more than 80 kilometers away. At the Junior Marathon 2013, however, the two were on the starting line as an opponent. “It was a really cool coincidence and today we are best friends,” says Rudorfer, who won his age group every time.
