Solid and a few tears: Tennis team out without chance

After the clear defeat at the start, Germany’s tennis players need a 3-0 against Great Britain. But that goes wrong. Now it is no longer about the title – but about another goal.

Without their number one Eva Lys, the German tennis players clearly missed the finals in the Billie Jean King Cup. After the 0: 3 against the Netherlands, Jule Niemeier’s single defeat in the duel with Great Britain sealed the quick end in qualification. The team of captain Rainer Schüttler will not be part of the final round for the first time since 2022.

In both games in the Haag, the selection of the German tennis federal government had to do without Lys. According to the association, the 23-year-old had been cold and could only train very limited.

Descent battle in November

Instead of playing the title of the team competition in September in Shenzhen in Chinese, it is now against the descent. In the playoffs in November there are duels with two other teams. Only the group winner may continue to play in the highest league next year.

Due to the surprisingly clear clap against hosts Netherlands, Niemeier against the British Sonay Kartal was strongly under pressure and had to win to keep the minimum chance of progressing. The former Wimbledon quarter-finalist was initially slightly improved, but had to give up again with 4: 6, 2: 6.

Big frustration with Niemeier

The frustration was visible: in the final phase of the opening set, niemeier missed a slap in the face after a mapped overhead ball. After the lost first round, she wiped a few tears out of her eyes with a towel.

On Thursday, Niemeier had 3: 6, 1: 6 against the world rankings 265. Eva Vedder lost. Tatjana Maria then lost as well as the double – consisting of Laura Siegemund and Anna -Lena Friedam.

Captain Schüttler: “Very disappointing”

“It’s very bitter. A 0: 3 is not what we want,” Schüttler commented on the clear result against the Netherlands. “This is very disappointing for us that we did not go out of the pitch as the winner and lost every match.”
