Training in Sakhir
McLaren rushed the Formula 1 competition in Bahrain
First Max Verstappen watches in Bahrain, then he drives after the World Cup rival. In Formula 1 training, a team is clearly faster than the rest.
The McLaren duo dominated the first day of training in the Formula 1 guest game in Bahrain. The Australian Oscar Piatri got the best time of the day, just behind it drove World Cup leaders Lando Norris in second place. The two McLaren pilots had a significant lead over the competition in the training rounds in Sakhir, which was led by George Russell in the Mercedes. Defending champion Max Verstappen, winner in Japan in the previous week, did not get out of seventh place in the Red Bull.
Verstappen had taken a break during opening training. The Dutch left his company car to the young pilot Ayumu Iwasa from Japan and treated himself to a break in the team garage at 35 degrees in short pants. The background to the recreational hour for the defending champion was the rule that the teams had to give a young driver in training on at least four racing weekends of the season.
In Bahrain, six race stables exchanged a regular pilot during the first exercise unit. Young pilots were also allowed to collect training kilometers at Ferrari, Mercedes, Aston Martin, Williams and Haas. Verstappen replacement Iwasa did not get beyond the penultimate place.
Clear favorite role for McLaren
In the second training session, all regular drivers got into the cockpit again. In the dark and somewhat cooler temperatures, conditions prevailed in the fourth season run on Sunday (5 p.m./Sky).
In front of the Grand Prix in the Bahrain scree desert, the Briton Norris leads the overall ranking with one point ahead of Verstappen. After the impressions of the training, McLaren in Sakhir should be difficult to conquer.
