Mark van Bommel comes too late in debut as an expert – and makes a confession
Not a good start for Mark van Bommel at Amazon Prime: At his first appearance as an expert, the Dutch was right – but had an explanation ready.
The most important rule on the first day in the new job is: be on time. As far as this is concerned, Mark van Bommel, as an expert at Amazon Prime, caught a good start.
The Dutch is supposed to classify the games of the Champions League for the streaming service and had its first assignment at the quarter -final second leg between Borussia Dortmund and FC Barcelona. There he should appear alongside Christoph Kramer and Josephine Henning. But when the broadcast from the stadium started, Van Bommel was missing in the expert team.
Mark van Bommel is stuck in the traffic jam
Moderator Alexander Schlüter had to excuse him: Van Bommel is still “in the traffic chaos”. After about ten minutes, the missing expert had found his way to the stadium and on the lawn – and explained how the delay came about. “There was a lot going on. I started a quarter to three in Maastricht. Five hours by car. They sent me from left to right,” said the 47-year-old.
Van Bommel had expected quite generously, actually the route between Maastricht and the Dortmund stadium can be put in just under two hours. In a Champions League quarter-finals, it looks different. Van Bommel tried everything and also made a little confession live: “If the police had seen me, I would have got 15 points.”
Many experts – and a crash: the 2014 world champions do that today
Manuel Neuer
Manuel Neuer is one of the few world champions from 2014 who are still playing at the highest level – although increasingly plagued by injuries. The goalkeeper has extended his contract at FC Bayern by another year until 2026

Mark van Bommel played as a professional at Bayern and FC Barcelona, later he trained VfL Wolfsburg. He replaces Prime Matthias Sammer at Amazon, who should no longer perform in BVB games. Sammer supports BVB as an external consultant, but his hard criticism of the team after the defeat against Bologna was not well received by the club. After leaving the black and yellow, which could not catch up with the 1: 4 deficit from the first leg at home, he should take his usual place again in the semi-finals.
