Croatian ex-international dies at the age of 39
Grief for footballer Nikola Pokrivac: The former EM participant was on the way back from training when there was a serious traffic accident. His professional career stopped a disease in 2015.
The former Croatian international Nikola Pokrivac died at the age of 39. Pokrivac died in a car accident on Friday evening, as the Croatian Football Association announced HNS. According to media reports, the Croatian with teammates was on the way back from training when it came to a serious traffic accident in Karlovac, about 45 minutes southwest of Zagreb.
In a message, HNS President Marijan Kustic expressed his “deepest condolences to this irreplaceable loss” of the family. “Nikola was a great footballer who lived for football until his last moment and proved great courage to live by overcaping a serious illness,” it said.
Nikola Pokrivac played 15 caps and took part in the 2008 EM finals
The 15-time international took part in the 2008 European Championship finals with Croatia and, among others, ran for Dinamo Zagreb, AS Monaco and Red Bull Salzburg. He won championship title, also with Salzburg under coach Huub Stevens in 2010. In 2015, according to the association, he ended his professional career because of a serious illness, but continued to play for several clubs in lower leagues.
