Vettel as Red Bull Motor Sports chief? “You will see”
They know each other for a long time, they appreciate themselves: Red Bull’s motorsport consultant Helmut Marko and ex-Red bull title collector Sebastian Vettel. No wonder that Marko Vettel sees as an ideal successor.
Red Bull’s motorsport consultant Helmut Marko described Sebastian Vettel (37) as his “ideal successor candidate”. How long the 82-year-old Austrian wants to do his job exactly, Marko did not explain on the sidelines of the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix. However, he told the broadcaster Sky: “It is very clear, at some point it will never be – even in old age.” The travel traps are not insignificant.
“It would of course be great if a man would continue to do it like Sebastian,” said Marko to a possible Red Bull motor sports consultant Vettel. The junior program is one thing. And Vettel is already working with girls in the kart area. “The other is of course the great strategic orientation of such a Formula 1 team,” emphasized Marko.
Vettel’s reaction leaves everything open
“You will see whether this is for me in the future,” said Vettel at Sky. He was still in contact with Marko. “As long as he still enjoys this and feels grown up to the job, he is in a unique role with his experience – especially when it comes to the dynamics in the team. He knows that best. It will be a shame if he leaves out of position at some point. Then it has to develop in a new, different direction.”
Marko believes that Vettel would also find his way around the role quickly. “He doesn’t need a year. That is two races and he has it under control.” And the Austrian is certain: “I think Sebastian has found himself and now knows what he wants to do in the future – and that is primarily motorsport.”
After his promotion, Vettel drove from the then Toro-Rosseo team (today Racing Bulls) from 2009 to the end of 2014 for Red Bull. At that time, as today, Christian Horner was the team leader. Vettel won the world driver’s world championship in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013. He ended his career after the 2022 season.
Marko since the Red Bull entry
In addition to his commitment to the environment, he also works for diversity in motorsport after his active career. In Dschidda, he organized the “Race4women” for the second time after 2021 for the second time after 2021.
Marko has been part of the 2005 season since Red Bull’s entry – and practically an integral part of it. He drove in 1971 and 1972 in Formula 1. When a stone hit his visor and he lost his left eye, the career was over.
As the motorsport consultant of Red Bull, the doctorate from Graz returned to Formula 1 over 30 years later. With Red Bull’s founder Dietrich Mateschitz, who died in October 2022, a friendship connected him. Marko is also responsible for the Red Bull junior program, from which both Vettel and the current Red Bull star Max Verstappen come.
