Controversy in France over the use of the Islamic “veil” on soccer players

The group known as the “Hijabeuses” (referring to the hijab) asked the Council of State in November 2021 for the repeal of article 1 of the FFF regulations that prohibits symbols of a “political, philosophical, religious or trade union” order.

“If they want to play football wearing a veil, why can’t they? Very often, girls cannot leave their homes to do things, the famous house arrest,” added the minister, who defended that they can practice sports.

The controversy, however, has intensified in recent days due to two decisions taken in the midst of the presidential election campaign, marked by the far-right candidates’ criticism of Islam and migration.

The Senate, controlled by the right-wing opposition, approved an amendment on Jan. 19 to ban the wearing of visible religious symbols during “sporting events.” The National Assembly (lower house), where the government has a majority, subsequently repealed it.

The justice also suspended an order from the Paris police prefecture that prohibited a demonstration that day of the “Hijabeuses” near the Assembly.
