Three Americans have attended every Super Bowl. They will be attending the event again on Sunday – probably for the last time in this constellation.
The Super Bowl is one of the biggest sporting events in the world. Especially in the USA there is an exceptional atmosphere when the final of the professional American football league NFL takes place. The trophy has been played for 55 years – and since then Tom Henschel, Gregory Eaton and Don Crisman have not missed a Super Bowl.
When the Super Bowl takes place for the 56th time in Los Angeles on Sunday, the three friends will of course be back with the game. They are proud members of the “Never Miss A Super Bowl Club”. All three are now in their 80s: Crisman is 85, Eaton 82 and Henschel 80. Sunday’s match at SoFi Stadium is expected to be their last Super Bowl outing together.
Super Bowl LVI: Probably the last time for the three friends
At least for Crisman, the eldest of the three, it’s clear that this will be his final journey from his home in Maine to each venue. Eaton, who is traveling from Michigan, would like to continue the tradition but is suffering from increasing health problems. Tom Henschel from Florida, the youngster in this trio, on the other hand, still has big plans: He wants to stay tuned until the Super Bowl 2026 and thus complete the 60 participations. “But old age gets us all,” he says.
The Super Bowl was first held in 1967, back then as the AFL-NFL World Championship Game. Henschel, Eaton and Crisman were there as spectators but didn’t know each other at the time. Henschel and Crisman only got to know each other in 1983, and Eaton joined them in the mid-2010s. Since then, the trio has also used the Super Bowl as an opportunity to spend a weekend together. “We just love football,” said Eaton, who paid $2,500 for his ticket this year.
Even Corona was not an obstacle
The three football fans also managed to get tickets for the event last year – although only 22,000 spectators were allowed due to the Corona measures. Although they had concerns about the infection situation, they did not let that stop them in the end. However, Henschel, Eaton and Crisman had to sit a few rows apart.
On Sunday at the game between the Los Angeles Rams and the Cincinnati Bengals, the three men are allowed to sit next to each other again. And what will probably be their last Super Bowl together comes full circle: The first Super Bowl in 1967 also took place in Los Angeles, just a few kilometers from this year’s venue.
