During his career, Steve McMichael was feared as a hard defender. Most recently, his fate touched many fans.

The Chicago Bears and numerous football fans mourn the legend Steve McMichael. The member of the Hall of Fame died at the age of 67, as a spokesman for the family said. McMichael had won the Super Bowl in 1986 as part of the iconic defense of the Bears, at that time Chicago lost only one game throughout the season.

In 2021, the incurable disease was (as) diagnosed with the incurable disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Nerves are destroyed, muscle loss occurs, sip, breathing and speech disorders.

“Steve McMichael had announced that he would fight with the same persistence that he also showed in the NFL for 15 seasons. And that is exactly what he did,” said Jim Porter, President of the Hall of Fame. “Anyone who played with or against Steve is of the same opinion: Nobody fought longer and harder than Steve as a player from the first moment to the final whistle.”

Hall of Fame recorded a year ago

McMichael, who was nicknamed Mongo, was accepted into the fame hall in 2024. In his career, he was 191 in a row for the Bears on the football field, more than any other professional from Chicago. He brought the opposing quarterback to the ground 95 times.

“It is cruel irony that the iron man of the Bears has succumbed to this dreaded illness,” said Bears boss George H. McCaskey. “Steve showed us during his struggle that his true strength lies in him and he demonstrated his class, dignity and humanity every day.”

Second career in the wrestling

After his football career, McMichael was active as a wrestler and temporarily a member of the Four Horsemen alongside the legendary Ric Flair. Afterwards he also worked as a coach at the indoor football team Chicago Slaughter.
