Salt tablets, no water
Jürgen Klopp reports of inhumane training methods in his youth
Jürgen Klopp set new standards as a trainer. Now he reports how hard the training methods were when he himself was on the pitch.
Jürgen Klopp is reluctant to remember some exercise units as an active footballer. “For athletics training from back then you would go to prison today. When I was young, we were given salt tablets and didn’t let us drink-it was 40 degrees outside, we have dried out, we should work out,” said the long-time star coach during a panel discussion about young football in the Leipzig arena.
The Klopp, who came from Württemberg, had initially spent his youth at SV Glatten in the northern Black Forest, where he noticed as a goal scorer and got the nickname “The Long”. Another youth ward was TuS Ergenzingen, 30 kilometers away. His then coach Walter Baur said about captain Klopp: “He wanted to be a soccer professional.”
After Jürgen Klopp’s player career, he became a successful coach
Via the stations 1. FC Pforzheim, Eintracht Frankfurt (amateurs), the Frankfurt association Viktoria Sindlingen and Rot-Weiss Frankfurt, Klopp landed at FSV Mainz 05 in 1990. Later he took over the Rheinhessen as a coach and led them to the Bundesliga for the first time in 2004. Borussia Dortmund followed two championships and a DFB Cup triumph.
After his volunteer after nine years at Liverpool FC, the 57-year-old has been responsible for Red Bull’s football area as a so-called Head of Global Soccer from Red Bull since January 1. His contract runs until 2029, and Klopp had recently ruled out a return to the coaching position.
