Leipzig, Leverkusen, learn? What Wagner is planning from summer

The final four of the Nations League is still involved in Sandro Wagner – after that he will be dismissed by Julian Nagelsmann. What does the ex-striker expect in the coming season?

If you believe him, Sandro Wagner has no plan for the near future from mid -June. After all, it has been known since Friday what the former top striker will no longer do in the future: to assist Julian Nagelsmann in his work as a national coach. The contract valid until the 2026 World Cup will end after the Nations League final Four in June this year.

And then? A variety of options appear realistic for the 37-year-old. Wagner now wants to think “in peace” what could follow his activities as head coach in Unterhaching and Nagelsmann assistant at the DFB. A selection.

Since the separation from Marco Rose, a trainer has been looking for the new season in Leipzig. Zsolt Löw should only do the job until the end of the season. Wagner could ideally fit into the concept as an up -and -coming coach and work with Jürgen Klopp, who acts at RB as Head of Global Soccer. The position is attractive, but the competition is considered large. Oliver Glasner and Roger Schmidt were last acted last.

Successor of Alonso or Kovac?

Bavarian Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund actually have coaches. But how long? The still champion from Leverkusen is a departure of successful coach Xabi Alonso. If the master maker wants to follow his former club Real Madrid and there on Carlo Ancelotti, Leverkusen would probably enable the change.

BVB coach Niko Kovac, like Alonso, has a contract until 2026. In contrast to the Spaniard, Kovac is not about being eliminated by a top club. Dortmund could miss the international competition of the coming season. At least it is questionable whether Kovac could stay at such an outcome.

Return to Hoffenheim

Wagner knows the club from its active time when he stormed for TSG in 2016 and 2017. The current coach Christian Ilzer could get into trouble after a bumpy season in summer. In this constellation, the question arises whether Hoffenheim has a chance at Wagner. It seems doubtful that the attacker gives up the DFB job in favor of an engagement in the Kraichgau.

An option called Wagner himself is the full concentration on his trainer training. He has completed this at the DFB since the beginning of the year as part of the 71st per license course. It is by far the most unlikely variant, because in this scenario Wagner could have remained an assistant under Nagelsmann for a year until the World Cup.
