So much collected tennis stars in prize money in 2024-and they want more

You want more money: recently the top stars of tennis have requested higher prize money for Grand Slam tournaments. Your earnings are already lush – an overview.

In tennis, a power struggle rages behind the scenes. On the one hand, it’s about love. The whole system is also available in the world tennis. The PTPA playing union, founded five years ago, filed a lawsuit against various umbrella organizations in the United States and the EU. The players’ associations ATP and WTA, the Tennis World Association (ITF) and the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) are affected.

The main allegation: The associations operated a cartel that yields the professionals and exposes far too high loads. According to media reports, it is about the tour plan, the ranking system and control of the stars of the stars that lie with the associations. But not all professionals support the PTPA. The German Alexander Zverev, number two in the world rankings, is critical of the lawsuit, even if he shares the criticism of the excessive stress.

More money required for Grand-Slam tournaments

The conflict for money ignites the prize money. As the French sports magazine “L’Equipe” reported, the top 20 players sent a letter to the organizers of the four Grand Slam tournaments, in which they demand higher prize money. In view of the high distributions, this seems strange. Jannik Sinner, number one in the world rankings, received a whopping $ 3.2 million for his victory at the US Open 2024. The winner for women, Coco Gauff, came up with the same sum.

The professionals’ argument is: In terms of the total revenue of the tournament of around $ 500 million, this is too small (15 percent). In this context, reference is made to American professional leagues such as the basketball league NBA or the ice hockey league NHL, where the players receive up to 50 percent of sales.

As with women, the top players cannot complain about low income. See in the photo gallery above, which the five most successful professionals have painted on prize money in 2024.
