Victory in the final
First Snooker world champion from Asia: Title to Chinese Zhao
Nobody from Asia has managed to do that before him. And the new snooker world champion from China can’t really grasp it either. Zhao Xintong wants to treat itself to a drink after this triumph.
Zhao Xintong has chosen the first snooker world champion from Asia. The 28-year-old Chinese defeated the Welsh Mark Williams in the final in Sheffield with 18:12. With the Chinese flag in his hands, Zhao was celebrated by the audience.
“I can’t believe what I did here,” said the new champion and ranked according to the right words: “I was so nervous.” However, he announced a “good drink” on this triumph, he announced.
Another catch -up in the last session
25 years after his first triumph, Williams missed his fourth World Cup title in the billiard variant. At the age of 50 he was the oldest finalist. “What can I say, there is a new superstar,” emphasized Williams with a view of the new and almost half as old champion.
Zhao laid the foundation for his success in the first of the four sessions when he won seven out of eight games. Williams fought back to the left-handed duel, but went into the last session with an 8:17 deficit. So Zhao only had to win one game, but he only succeeded after Williams had won five one after the other and caused excitement again. “He is the best,” the winner praised the loser with respect afterwards.
The new world champion was already closed
A total of ten Chinese were represented among the 32 players of the main field, including Ding Junhui, who was the only professional from Asia in 2016 and was then the title. After successful qualifications, Zhao switched off Ronnie O’Sullivan in the semi-finals and refused the Englishman’s record of a eighth World Cup title in Crucible Theater.
The new world champion is not undisputed. Because of his involvement in a manipulation scandal, Zhao was closed for 20 months, even if he is not said to have actively influenced the outcome of games. However, he admitted that he had bet on matches. Because of the lock, he lost his professional status and competed as an amateur at the World Cup. He will receive this back for the coming season, then the prize money of £ 500,000 (around 587,000 euros) will be paid for the title.
