“Worst number two”? Tennis star Zverev defends himself
Alexander Zverev speaks openly in Rome about his formation between the tournaments in Melbourne and Munich – and feels too criticized. It remains to be number one.
Tennis professional Alexander Zverev believes the public criticism of his form crisis after the Australian Open. Suddenly he was something like “the worst number two in the story”, said the 28-year-old before the Masters 1000 tournament kicked off in Rome, in which he competed as defending champion this week. It was shown as if he didn’t deserve to be there. But the ranking does not lie.
Zverev lost to the Italian Jannik Sinner in the final of the first Grand Slam tournament of the year in Melbourne, who gave his comeback in Rome after a doping lock. After that, the top German player fell into a hole. He had “two bad months” and didn’t play a good tennis, said Zverev. He felt “something burned out” and used relaxation in view of the many games and travel traps. Now he is on the right track again, the native of Hamburg continued.
Zverev wants to continue to be number one in the world
In mid-April Zverev won the ATP tournament in Munich, but at the Madrid Masters, however, he recently failed early in the round of 16 again. Other stars such as the Serb Novak Djokovic and the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz played inconsistently in Sinner’s absence and did not manage to displace the 23-year-old from the top of the world rankings. However, he continues to believe that he can become number one, Zverev assured, who has a release in the first round of the tournament in Rome.
