British journalists report threats to life and limb after revealing alleged doping case Kamila Valiyeva. Now the IOC is getting involved.
On its online site, the British “Guardian” reports of threats against several journalists. Accordingly, one of the two reporters from the website “Inside the Games” who first reported on the positive doping test of figure skating star Kamila Valiyeva received death threats. In addition, a Twitter user wrote to one of the journalists that he would find “new substances” in his tea. The website draws a comparison to ex-spy Alexander Litvinenko’s poisoned tea in London in 2006.
Valiyeva case at the 2022 Olympics: IOC calls for calm
After the alleged threats against British journalists because of their reporting in the doping case of figure skater Kamila Valiyeva, the IOC has called for moderation. “We should all take a tranquilizer, as they said when I was younger,” said Mark Adams, spokesman for the International Olympic Committee, on Saturday at the Beijing Winter Games. Previously, several British reporters had reported that they had been massively threatened on the Internet and sometimes also attacked by media representatives from Russia because of their publications on the positive doping test of the Russian team Olympic champion Valiyeva.
Since a 15-year-old was at the center of the case in Valiyeva, Adams pointed out that there were “all sorts of points of contention.” “It is unacceptable that this turns into threats and violence, if that’s the case,” said the IOC spokesman. Everyone is asked to remain calm. “Even among ourselves, it’s important that we observe the Olympic values of respect,” said Adams.
Cas is to decide urgently on Valiewa’s doping ban
Figure skating prodigy Valiewa tested positive for the banned heart drug trimetazidine at the Russian championships in December. The case only became known after the Russian team triumphed at the Winter Games.
The International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is now to decide in an urgent procedure in Beijing whether the Russian anti-doping agency should lift the provisional ban on Valiyeva. It is also about the right to start for the top favorite in the Olympic women’s singles, which begins on February 15.
