Handball World Cup soon no longer with public law-but on free TV
In Germany, handball TV is number two, many millions of people watch the World Championships. There was now a surprise in the allocation of rights.
The most important games of the upcoming three handball world championships run on free TV, but not at ARD and ZDF. In the poker for the TV rights of the tournaments 2027, 2029 and 2031, the two public broadcasters went away empty-handed and surprisingly had to let private competition: ProSiebenSat.1 secured the live broadcasts of all World Cup parts of the German national handball teams for freely receiving television.
According to its own statements, the media company concluded an extensive agreement with the Rechenagentur Sportfive. It is still open on which transmitter the games are broadcast.
What is certain, however, is that handball fans have no additional costs and, in addition to the German games, can see further selected games including the final. The package also includes three World Cup tournaments of women and the qualification games of women and men for 2028 Olympics.

The company recently also acquired rights for world basketball and European championships as well as the new soccer club World Cup. ProSieben is currently showing the German World Hockey World Cup.
The fans are spared a free TV blackout such as 2015 and 2017. The World Cup games were shown in 2015 at the Pay TV station Sky and in 2017 at the then DHB sponsor Deutsche Kreditbank (DKB). At that time, the DKB posted less than a tenth of the usual spectators at ARD and ZDF. Afterwards the World Cup tournaments could be seen again with the public broadcasters.
Handball is TV number two
Handball at the big tournaments is TV number two behind football. An example: The World Cup out of the German team in the quarter-finals against Portugal saw an average of 7.083 million people. Therefore, ARD and ZDF also offered the rights of the 2027 World Cup and the following two tournaments. The Sportfive agency marketed the rights on behalf of the Handball World Association IHF.
After all, the rights for the upcoming EM tournaments have already secured the two public broadcasters. The agreement with the EHF includes the European Championship games of the German men’s and women’s national teams until 2030.
