Difficult European Championship program for German handball players
The German handball players want to fight for a medal at the 2026 European Championship. The preliminary round already has crisp tasks. It will be really difficult in the second tournament phase.
On the way to the desired medal, Germany’s handball players at the 2026 European Championship have to clear heavy chunks. The team of national coach Alfred Gislason is dealing with the Olympic third of Spain, Serbia and Austria in preliminary round group A.
“We caught a strong, very balanced group. It is just a European championship-there are only good opponents anyway,” commented Gislason, the draw in Herning, where the German team will play all of their EM games.
“Spain has started to integrate its outstanding talents. Austria provides a routine team and Serbia also brings a very good team with the Berlin axis and width,” said Gislason about the preliminary round opponents. National team manager Benjamin Chatton also expects close duels. “A European Championship usually has more than a final. The group constellation does not allow a slip,” he said.
Difficult path for DHB team
In addition to Denmark, Sweden and Norway host the final round from January 15th to February 1st next year. The 24 teams initially play in six groups of four in the preliminary round. The two best teams each reach the main round, in which there are two six groups.
Possible opponents of the DHB selection In the event of progress, world champion and Olympic champion Denmark, European champion France, are the World Cup fourth Portugal and Norway. “Everything that would come to us after the preliminary round would be very, very good,” said Gislason.
The first and second places of the two main round groups reach the semi-finals. The teams in third place play the game for fifth place. At home European Championships 2024, the German team had just missed a medal fourth.
