Giro: Plapp gets a stage victory – Roglic loses pink jersey
The Australian Luke Plapp takes a heart and is rewarded for his solo ride at Giro d’Italia. Primoz Roglic has to give up the coveted jersey of the leading one.
Luke Plapp has won the eighth stage of the 108th Giro d’Italia. After 196 kilometers from Giulianova on the Adriatic coast to Castelraimondo, the 24 -year -old cycling professional prevailed after a solo ride over 46 kilometers. In his greatest street success so far, the Australian time trial champion referred to the Dutch Wilco Kelderman (Visma/Lease A Bike) and Diego Ulissi (XDS Astana) from Italy to other podium places.
Ulissi also took over the overall lead. Because Topfavorit Primoz Roglic, who had taken over the pink jersey the day before after the first mountain arrival, crossed the finish line with a gap of 4:50 minutes. The 35-year-old Slovenian from the German Team Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe is now a third ago in the classification as a third. The second seventh Lorenzo Fortunato (XDS Astana Team) from Italy is second with a deficit of twelve seconds.
Attacks and a solo
Shortly after the start there were attacks, including from the Cottbus Max Kanter from the Astana team. The German champion Marco Brenner from Tudor Pro Cycling also showed up at the front.
Georg Steinhauser (EF Education-Easypost) belonged to the outlier group of the day, he showed a strong race, but could not keep the connection to Plapp, Ulissi and Kelderman. In the end, he finished eighth with a gap of a good three minutes.
Gravel and the fear of falling
On Sunday it goes on the ninth stage from Gubbio to Siena. The cycling professionals have to drive over a total of five gravel sectors with a total of 29.7 kilometers to arrive at the famous Piazza del Campo.
