“We play for everything”: Deb team in front of quarter-final showdown
The German ice hockey national team can no longer afford a mistake at the end of the group phase in Herning in Danish. The journey home threatens for the first time in seven years before the KO phase.
Win or fly. For the German national ice hockey team, the evening (8:20 p.m./ProSieben and Magenta Sport) against Denmark is about moving into the World Cup quarter-finals. “We play for everything,” said attacker Marcel Noebels in front of the showdown against the co-host and direct competitor.
“We need the best performance in the tournament. There are no more excuses,” emphasized captain Moritz Seider from the Detroit Red Wings from the NHL. “We have to be ready for the biggest game of the group phase.”
The team of national coach Harold Kreis can only make a win in Herning on Wednesday. Otherwise, the quarter-finals have been taking place for the first time since 2018 without the selection of the German Ice Hockey Association.
Record Noebels criticized
“We have to be freezing cold. We are currently missing the lightness. We don’t have to do ten things, one would be enough,” complained Noebels, who, as a successor for the injured Lukas Reichel, only joined the team for the sixth preliminary round against defending champion Czech Republic (0: 5).
The striker of the Eisbären Berlin called for better coordination with each other. “At the moment we have the problem that two players work with the pane, three only watch,” said the 33-year-old. “If someone has the pane, he relies on the other to do something special and let two people stand. Our strength is to run. The support for the other must be there from the start.”
Noebels was also there at the last preliminary round of Germany seven years ago – also in Herning. At that time, the DEB selection lost 2: 3 at the start of the tournament against Denmark. “We have to be well prepared against an opponent who will play with a lot of emotions,” said Noebels.
Denmark hopes for NHL star
After three clear defeats against the top nations, both teams clearly won three times against the smaller opponents. However, Denmark comes to the group final with the three wins, while the German team collected three bankruptcies in series.
The hosts may have another trump card: NHL star Nikolaj Ehlers from the Winnipeg Jets had opened himself to Herning immediately after his team in the NHL playoffs and should be on the ice in the evening.
