Bavaria and NRW are promoting Olympic plans

The concepts for a German Olympic application must be available by the end of May. Munich and the Rhein-Ruhr region are positioned. It is a long way to be awarded.

Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia have continued to promote their Olympic plans at the political level. In Bavaria, Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) assured a cabinet meeting with Munich’s mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) that the state government gives back revenue for a new Olympic application from the state capital. NRW also positioned itself with a cabinet decision for the Rhein-Ruhr region.

The German Olympic Sports Association (DOSB) has been working intensively on a new Olympic application since 2023. Four different regional concepts are currently being worked out. These are Berlin, Hamburg, Munich and the Rhein-Ruhr region.

Munich application costs of six or seven million euros

“We think the Olympic Games should be in Munich,” said Söder and said very confidently: “We will give a good picture for Germany and get a lot of honor.”

First, on May 28, the Munich city council must give the green light for the concept. The concept for summer games must again be submitted to the DOSB by May 31. The application costs amount to around six or seven million euros, as Mayor Reiter admitted. “I would like to have more positive vibes in the city,” said the SPD politician for the Olympics.

NRW advertises with enthusiasm, experience and infrastructure

In North Rhine-Westphalia, Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst promoted the Rhein-Ruhr region, which brings enthusiasm, experience and the necessary infrastructure to align the mega event sustainably and at the highest level.

“We want the best athletes in the world to experience their big moment here, in sports land number 1-worn by a region that loves and can do great sport,” said the CDU politician. On May 28th, Wüst will officially present the application to the DOSB together with the top of the cities involved, it said.

The concepts must be submitted by the end of May. In autumn 2026, the DOSB plans to decide which cities or region for Germany should go into the race for Olympic Games at a general meeting.

“We won’t embarrass Germany”

On October 26, there should be a citizens’ decision in Munich as to whether people from the state capital of Olympia 2036 or beyond. “We hope very much in a large majority,” said Söder. “We won’t embarrass Germany, on the contrary.”

The Prime Minister referred to Munich pluses such as the existing sports facilities of 1972 Olympics, the infrastructure, the airport or the experience of aligning major events such as the European Championships 2022.

Los Angeles 2028, Brisbane 2032

It is currently not yet clear when the International Olympic Committee (IOC) under the newly elected President Kirsty Coventry awards the games for 2036 and beyond.

The next two summer games are awarded to Los Angeles 2028 and Brisbane 2032. Potential applicants for 2036 and 2040 include Turkey with Istanbul, India or Madrid and Rome.
