Grubau is not enough: DEB team misses quarter-finals
Germany has not been in the quarter -finals at a World Cup for the first time since 2018. After a weak game, the nerves fail in penalty shooting against Denmark. NHL star Sützle becomes a symbol of the misery.
Germany fails at the minimum goal: The national team missed the leap to the quarter-finals for the first time in the World Hockey Championship. After the 1: 2 (0: 0, 1: 1, 0: 1) After penalty shooting against Denmark, the team of national coach Harold Kreis slipped to fifth place in Group B behind the Co-host and is not in the KO round for the first time since the 2018 World Cup.
Not a single German shooter met in penalty shooting. Berlin’s Korbinian Geibel (40th minute) had achieved the lead that NHL star Nikolay Ehlers (50th) equalized.
“Now there are no excuses,” Captain Moritz Seider announced before the match. After three clear bankruptcies against the top nations, the selection of the German Ice Hockey Association was quite impressed by the host of the host. NHL goalkeeper Philipp Grubauer from the Seattle Kraken had to present himself in top form in front of 10,500 spectators.
The 33-year-old Rosenheimer kept his team further from a goal. The Danish keeper Frederik Dichow, on the other hand, hardly had to distinguish itself. “We just have to shoot the gate more often,” Kreis asked for magenta before the game started. NHL star Tim Stützle and Co. remained completely harmless in the first weak 20 minutes. 5: 14 shots was the balance in the first third in favor of the Danes.
NHL star support with problems
After three games against the outsiders, the DEB selection scored 15 goals. This was followed by only four goals against Switzerland, the USA and the Czech Republic. Even in his fifth World Cup appearance, Tim Stützle from the Ottawa Senators was not the hoped-for goal scorer. In North America, he provided the Canadian playoff with 24 goals and 55. He could hardly prevail in Herning. “There are many, many things that you have to analyze afterwards,” said Deb sports director Christian Künast at ProSieben.
With individual actions, the German team tried to come into play in the second third. Stützle let his class flash as he failed with a good attempt at Dichow. Alexander Ehl’s chance also clarified the keeper (31st minute). The newcomer from the Adler Mannheim always caused danger in front of the Danish goal.
Defender Geibel meets, Denmark replies
With the first good offensive campaigns, the German team was finally in the match. With significantly more power, the district team presented itself and came again and again. The deserved reward: a shot from Berlin’s Korbinian Geibel landed in the Danish network for deserved leadership. “We have remained patient,” said striker Yasin Ehliz in magenta.
It all looked like the fourth World Cup victory in series against the co-host. But the Danes have their NHL star. Nikolaj Ehlers, who had traveled to Herning in the NHL playoffs in the NHL playoffs at short notice, scored 1-1 compensation (50th).
The next setback was less later. Mannheim’s Marc Michaelis, who was already struck in the second third, got the puck in the face and immediately left the ice bleeding. In the penalty shootout, all German shooters, also supporters, failed their nerves.
