Telekom acquired the TV rights for the 2026 World Cup. It can broadcast all 104 games in Germany. The package contains even more events.

Telekom has been awarded the contract for the broadcasting rights of the World Cup next year. With its payer MagentaTV, the telecommunications company will show the 104 games of the 2026 World Cup for its customers. The right-wing package includes other tournaments, including the Women’s World Cup 2027.

“Telekom bought the largest rectangular package that has ever been available,” said Wolfgang Metze, Managing Director of private customers at Telekom. The U20 World Championships of the Juniors 2025 and 2027 also include the comprehensive contract with the FIFA World Football Association. The package comprises a total of 272 live broadcasts.

ARD and ZDF go away empty -handed – sub -licenses possible

All games should be shown for customers of the telecommunications company. It remained open at first where the games of the German national team will be freely seen in the event of qualification for the tournament. However, the Broadcasting Treaty ensures that you must be received free of charge. In theory, Telekom could offer the games of the DFB selection even on free TV.

ARD and ZDF, who showed the games of the German national team in the previous World Cup tournaments, are empty. However, it is possible that the two public broadcasters acquire sub-licenses from Telekom. There was a corresponding agreement for the EM 2024.

World Cup 2026 becomes the largest final round in history

With the first 48 teams and over 100 games, the men’s tournament 2026 is the largest final round in World Cup history. The game is played in the USA, Mexico and Canada. The opening match will kick off on June 11, 2026, the final five weeks later on July 19. There will be 72 games in the group phase alone. For comparison: 2022, when the World Cup was held in Qatar from November 20 to December 18 and Argentina, led by captain Lionel Messi, won a total of 64 games.

Telekom announced part of its TV staff for the transfer of the men’s World Cup in 2026. Johannes B. Kerner for MagentaTV is used as a moderator, Wolff Fuss will comment on the games of the German national team, among other things.
