In her parade discipline, the Carinthian made her first two jumps safely in the snow, including the Cab Double Cork 900 that she made famous. In the end she was sixth with 153.50 points. Best of the qualification was the favored New Zealander Zoi Sadowski-Synnott ahead of the Japanese Kokomo Murase and Reira Iwabuchi.
“It’s going according to plan. Qualifying is always stressful because you have to be tactical,” said Gasser after the work was done. For the final qualification it was necessary to finish in the top twelve with the two best of three jumps. Gasser, the 2018 Olympic champion in this discipline, managed this without any major difficulties – despite “safety jumps” at the beginning. “I knew: if I stand it, it should be enough to move in.”
“Tomorrow there will be no more tactics”
If the 30-year-old wants to fight for the medals in the final on Tuesday, she needs an improvement. Although Gasser was only five points short of a medal on Monday, it was 23 points for gold. The Carinthian knows that and wants to go on the offensive: “Tomorrow there will be no more tactics, I have to unpack everything I have.”
The favorites qualified with one exception: the American Jamie Anderson only managed one good jump and was eliminated in 15th place in the qualification. The “relieved” Austrian was spared this fate. It had not gone so well in training with a much slower start-up. In addition, friend and training partner Clemens Millauer suffered an ankle fracture during training.
Gasser announced “more risk” for the final on Tuesday. Among other things, she hopes to be able to turn the 900 into a 1200. So far she hasn’t been able to show that in training because she didn’t have the speed. “The speed was great today. I hope the conditions stay the same.”
