Werder Bremen separates with immediate effect from Ole Werner

Werder without Werner: Bremen has separated from Ole Werner according to matching media reports. As the “Bild” and Sky reported, the Bundesliga club will go into the new season without the chief coach, which is popular on the Weser. It was only on Monday that the association announced that Werner would not extend his contract in June 2026.

The decision to separate is said to have been made after a crisis meeting on the late Monday evening and announced on Tuesday by Werder. The association was initially not available for a statement. Elversberg’s coach Horst Steffen is considered a hot candidate for the successor of Werner.

According to the lost Bundesliga relegation (1: 2 against 1. FC Heidenheim) and the missed ascent to the upper house, this did not want to comment on its future. “There is still no information from me. I have to process the game now,” said Steffen at the Sky microphone.

Werner’s decision not to extend the expiring working paper regretted football managing director Clemens Fritz. “We have to accept the decision now and will analyze the current situation and decide what Werder is the best solution,” said Fritz. The club wanted to take “the necessary time” for this process.

The result should not surprise many fans, because another year in view of the situation would have been difficult for both sides. However, many disappointed green and white fans should leave the decision.

Werner enjoyed great popularity. The former Holstein Kiel coach had started his office in Bremen in November 2021 and further improved the club.

Almost half a year after taking up service, the traditional North German association returned to the Bundesliga and mastered relegation a year later. In the past seasons, Werder became eighth and ninth and played around a European Cup place.

The return to an international competition is the great longing of all fans and club managers in the former Champions League participant.

But Werner should not have gone quickly enough. It is also said to have crashed between the club and Werner because of different views of the squad planning and future sporting ambitions. The negotiations for an extension of Werner’s expiring contract were unsuccessful.

The trainer recently increased the pressure on the club through his own statements. “Of course, I know that certain things don’t work here because they are not financially feasible,” said Werner in a “Deichstube” interview after the end of the season.

But: “I have been here for a long time for professional football conditions. The next summer it would be four and a half years. If you want to create new energy again and again, there are only two options: either it has to change things around a trainer, or at some point it is at the point where it is good for everyone if something is going on in the position of the coach.”
