Contract until 2028
Kracher in Augsburg: Sandro Wagner becomes the new coach
FC Augsburg secures one of the hottest coaching shares in Germany. Sandro Wagner takes over the Bundesliga clubs in summer.
FC Augsburg ensured a real coup and committed Sandro Wagner as a new coach. The current assistant of national football coach Julian Nagelsmann succeeds the Danes Jess Thorup and receives a contract until summer 2028. The club of the German Press Agency confirmed this. Sky and “Bild” also reported on the personnel.
The Swabians had separated from Thorup and sports director Marinko Jurendic after a multi -day season analysis. There had been rumors about Wagner’s commitment for some time.
Sandro Wagner didn’t want to wait for the World Cup anymore
Wagner, 37, had announced at the end of April to leave the German Football Association after the final Four of the Nations League from June June 8th. “I would like to take the next step soon. It is no secret that it is my great wish to work as a head coach at some point. With the start of my football teacher training in January, this has become increasingly clear to me,” said the former striker.
Wagner no longer wanted to wait for the World Cup with the title chance in the USA, Mexico and Canada. “I can personally understand Sandro’s wish to become a head coach and respect his decision,” said national coach Nagelsmann.
Cancellation to Hoffenheim
The eight -time international was permanently traded at large clubs. Whether at the stumbling district giant Borussia Dortmund, at Bayer Leverkusen as the successor to Xabi Alonso or at RB Leipzig with chief supervisor Jürgen Klopp. Wagner canceled his former club, TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.
Now FC Augsburg has been awarded the contract that had caused a sensation with a coaching staff more than six years ago when the former national goalkeeper Jens Lehmann had become an assistant coach. However, this cooperation only lasted two and a half months.
The absurd rise of Sandro Wagner

Co-national coach Sandro Wagner
A picture that will soon be seen more often: Sandro Wagner cheered the test victory against France in the DFB dress. Wagner was actually planned as an assistant coach of the U20-now he is supporting the A national team at the home European Championships next year. It is not the first surprising turn in his career.

Club boss criticizes image as a gray mouse
Before this season, Augsburg’s managing director Michael Ströll had expressed the desire to finally take the image of the gray mouse in its 14th Bundesliga season.
But as in the season 2023/24, when five defeats in the final spurt cost an international starting place, FC Augsburg also collapsed now. After four defeats in a row and ended the team around captain Jeffrey Gouweleeuw the season as a twelfth in the table. After the 1-2 against Union Berlin, the Augsburgers had announced the season analysis-with the serious personnel consequence.
Not sexy enough under Thorup
Wagner successfully trained the SpVgg Unterhaching for two years, which he left after promotion to the 3. League 2023. Since September of the same year he has been with Benjamin Glück assistant coach from Nagelsmann. Previously, he had been the co-coach of the U 20 national team and had already completed an A-international game under the then interim team leader Rudi Völler together with head coach Hannes Wolf.
A popular trainer had to go in Thorup in Augsburg. The Dane, facing the people, had taken over the Fuggerstädter from Enrico Maassen in October 2023. However, he was unable to convey an intoxicating playing style to the team and instead relied on a defensive approach. At least so FC Augsburg had nothing to do with the descent. Wagner should now make the team appear much more attractive.
