Mexican del Toro defends Giro leaders
Who will stop the young Isaac del Toro? The Mexican shows no weakness on the difficult stage on Friday. Carapaz and Co. have the last chance to attack on Saturday.
The Mexican Isaac del Toro brilliantly mastered the royal stage at the 108th Giro d’Italia and has come a big step closer to the overall victory. After 166 kilometers from Biella to Champoluc, the 21-year-old took the second day rank and rolled over the finish line with his great adversary Richard Carapaz.
After five crunchy climbs and a total of almost 5000 meters to be overcome, del Toro expanded his lead on the 19th stage thanks to the bonification at the finish by two seconds from 41 to 43 seconds.
Next big exam on Saturday
The British Simon Yates and Derek Gee from Canada could even hang out the duo on the last kilometers. Nicolas Prodhomme, who crowned a courageous escape and could no longer be placed by the favorite group in the final, secured the day victory. Carapaz and Del Toro drove 58 seconds after the 28-year-old over the finish line.
The 205 demanding kilometers from Vères to Sestriere on Saturday are the next difficult exam and will make the decision on the overall victory before the closing stage. The German champion Marco Brenner from Tudor Pro Cycling had to give up the race on the royal stage.
