Formula 1 training
Piatri with best time – almost a second back
Oscar Piatri races in first place before qualifying. And how! The Australian is by far the fastest, even the teammate cannot keep up. Likewise, not Max Verstappen.
Formula 1 top rider Oscar Piatri has outclassed the competition before the fight for the starting places for the Grand Prix of Spain. Even his McLaren teammate and World Cup pursuit Lando Norris needed over half a second for his top round at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in the third free training session.
Third place came Ferrari-Pilot Charles Leclerc in front of George Russell in Mercedes and world champion Max Verstappen in the Red Bull. The Dutch, who won the past three editions of the race in Catalonia, was 0.988 seconds slower than Piatri.
Wing question remains open
The first place of all three free training went to one of the two McLaren drivers. Hopes of competitors that the stricter controls and regulations for the front wings could not be noticeable on the performance of the tradition of the traditional British team were not confirmed for the time being.
At the ninth Grand Prix of the season, a technical directive decided months ago became effective. It is about the flexibility of the front wing, which is further restricted and measured using new strict methods. In short: he can bend less.
Before the race on Sunday (3 p.m./Sky and RTL), Piatri leads with a three-point lead on Monaco winner Norris. Verstappen is third, the defending champion is 25 points behind Piatri.
