The triumph of the PSG in the Champions League ensures exuberant victory celebrations in France. But at the end of the night, the authorities not only count hundreds of arrests, but also two deaths.

There were two dead and almost 200 injuries in France at the final victory of Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. As the Interior Ministry announced in a preliminary balance, 559 people were arrested nationwide, the vast majority of them in Paris. 22 security forces and 7 firefighters were therefore violated in riots. The authorities also counted almost 700 fires, several of them were burning vehicles.

In Dax in southern France, a young man was stabbed on the edge of a fan celebration. How exactly the incident came about was initially unclear. According to the police, the exact age of the dead was not confirmed. According to media reports, the second dead person should be a woman who was on a scooter in Paris and was hit by fans by car.

Most of the 192 injuries had no details. In Grenoble in Eastern France, a car had driven into a celebrating crowd. According to the police, it was an accident. Four members of a family were injured, two of them seriously.

Riots on the edge of the celebrations had been particularly in Paris. There were riots in particular on the magnificent boulevard Champs-Élysées later cleared by the police and near the prince’s park, where tens of thousands of football fans had gathered for public viewing.

Rioters looted shops, folded window panes and lit cars. The emergency services were partly shot at with fireworks and, in turn, rose with tear gas against rioters.

France’s Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau wrote “Barbarians” in the evening that would have provoked forces, while true fans were enthusiastic about the final between PSG and Inter Milan in Munich. Later he divided the Paris club called to all fans to behave respectfully and peacefully.

Fans stormed lawn after a historical victory in Munich

With a 5-0 win against the Italian runner-up Inter Milan, PSG had first secured the title in the European premier class in the club’s history. The final was held in Munich, where French fans celebrated with a base tower after the final whistle and also damaged the lawn in the stadium.

On the other hand, it remained largely peaceful on the streets of the Bavarian capital: Despite smaller clashes between rival fans, most followers had behaved fairly and not rioted, the police said in the morning.
