Big moment from Munich: fans commemorate dead 9-year-old Xana
In the PSG triumph in the Champions League, great feelings shape the Munich evening. A tribute to the dead daughter of coach Luis Enrique touches everyone present.
There is no more goosebumps. In the middle of the ecstasy about the historic Champions League triumph by Paris Saint-Germain, Luis Enrique spreads a t-shirt for his died daughter Xana. Fans unroll a huge banner in honor of the beloved coach and the girl who had torn bone cancer out of life far too early. “Xana is always with us, we always think of you. We love her,” says Enrique on the lawn of the Munich Arena. “I think she would run here among us.”
The breathtaking 5-0 by PSG around Matchwinner Désiré Doué in the royal class finale against Inter Milan was an evening of the emotion extreme. There was Luis Enrique in a mix of Freudentaumel about his second royal class coup and at the same time the memory of Xana. On the other hand, a completely perplexed trainer colleague Simone Inzaghi looked into the void after the huge disgrace and left his future open with Inter.
Homage in the final of the Champions League for Xana Enrique
Ex-professional Enrique had led FC Barcelona in Berlin to victory in the Champions League ten years ago. A picture of back then, as he puts a winning flag in the lawn next to daughter Xana, the PSG supporters now picked up in Munich and reminded the scene with the large banner. Xana died of bone cancer in August 2019 at the age of nine. Many fans had previously put on black T-shirts with the same motif as a sign of solidarity and compassion.

“The fans gave me and my family a great pleasure,” said Enrique. “I think of my daughter every day, even if I don’t win titles. My daughter is always with us. She supports me. I feel her presence.” The Spanish sports newspaper Marca also recalled Xana and headlined on Sunday: “There was a party in heaven.”
