Bayern’s mini-crisis encourages Salzburg

Austria’s football champions FC Salzburg are looking forward to the biggest match to date since the Red Bull empire joined in 2005. In tomorrow’s round of 16 of the Champions League (9 p.m., ServusTV), the people of Mozart will receive the German record champions FC Bayern, who have already triumphed six times in the “premier class” – 1974, 1975, 1976, 2001, 2003 and 2020.

That inspires respect, but not fear. The whole of Salzburg is energized, the atmosphere in Wals-Siezenheim is breathtaking. All 29,520 tickets have long been sold out, the mini-crisis in Munich, which star goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has to specify, is fueling the hope of a sensation. If Bochum can give Bayern four goals in a 4-2 win in the German Bundesliga, why shouldn’t the “Red Bulls” do the same?

Salzburg’s European Cup record against German clubs is balanced. In twelve duels there were five wins, two draws and five defeats – two of them against Bayern in the group stage of the Champions League 2020 (2: 6, 1: 3). “Our mentality is fine, the win over Rapid (2-1, note) gives us momentum for the Bayern game,” said Salzburg coach Matthias Jaissle.
