French tennis fairy tale in Paris

Iga Swiatek has always won in Paris. But this time she finds an opponent who is even stronger – number one in the world. The tennis fairy tale of a French woman has also ended.

The world ranking second Coco Gauff has ended the tennis fairy tale of the French wildcard player Lois Boisson and reached the final for the second time after 2022 at the French Open. The 21 -year -old American prevailed in the semifinals against the French woman, which is one year older, 6-1, 6-2.

In the final on Saturday, Gauff has to deal with the world ranking of Aryna Sabalenka. The 27-year-old from Belarus won her semi-finals against defending champion Iga Swiatek from Poland with 7: 6 (7: 1), 4: 6, 6: 0 and thus ended Swiatek’s impressive winning streak in the Stade Roland Garros.

The Polish had won the title in the French capital in the past three years and played a total of 26 games in a row. For Sabalenka it is the first final participation in the Stade Roland Garros.

Gauff in 69 minutes

Boisson had caused a sensation at the French Open as number 361 in the world and was the first French woman to reach the semi -finals since Marion Bartoli 14 years ago. On the way there she had turned off the world ranking third Jessica Pegula and the Russian Mirra Andrejewa.

Against Gauff Boisson were clearly noticeable in the exertion of the past few days. The French woman could not build on her carefree and powerful game from the rounds before. Nevertheless, after the game she was adopted by the spectators with ovation. Gauff determined the action right from the start and only needed 69 minutes for success.

“I know you would have preferred to see it if she had won,” said Gauff with a smile. “Whenever you called her name, I quietly said my name to me,” said the American after the victory in a quick run.

Gripping match between Sabalenka and Swiatek

Sabalenka had to work much harder for her progress. The number one in the world and defending champion Swiatek met at eye level for around two hours. Sabalenka started furiously, then the Polish fought back before number one in the tennis world got the first set in the tiebreak. In the second round, Swiatek increased again and made the sentence compensation. But then Sabalenka suddenly turned up and played the perfect third set.

“It feels incredible. But the job is not yet done. I still have to win a game,” said Sabalenka, who has won three Grand Slam tournaments so far.
