Criticism of World Boxing
Gender tests: Box-Olympic champion not at tournament
Olympic champion Imane Khelif does not start at a boxing tournament in the Netherlands. The organizers regret this and blame the World Association.
The lack of boxing Olympic champion Imane Khelif at a tournament in Eindhoven in Dutch has caused violent criticism from the organizers. “The decision to exclude IMANE is not ours. We regret this,” said the media director of the tournament, Dirk Renders, the AP.
The 26-year-old Algerian, who won Olympic gold last year, actually wanted to box at an international tournament in Eindhoven for the first time. After the introduction of mandatory gender tests by the WORLD Boxing association, it must not compete.
Mayor demands invitation from Khelif
The association recognized by the International Olympic Committee had already announced in the previous week not to allow Khelif to allow the Eindhoven Box Cup and announced tests as “part of a new guideline to gender, age and weight”.
During the Olympics in Paris, Khelif was at the center of a violent gender debate. World Boxing had recently explained that she shouldn’t take part in any World Boxing event until she underwent a genetic gender in accordance with the rules and test procedures of World Boxing.
“As far as we are concerned, all athletes are welcome in Eindhoven. To exclude athletes on the basis of controversial gender tests,” wrote Eindhoven’s Mayor Jeroen Dijsselbloem in a letter to the Dutch Boxing Association and the International Association. He asked the organizers to invite Khelif to the event at least.
