Finnish national coach nominates ex-player-she is 51 years old
Mistakes happen: Finland’s national soccer trainer must have had a blackout when nomination of her team. She confused a first name.
It can happen: The national coach of the Finnish National Elf, Outi Saarinen, made an amusing but serious mistake for a game against Serbia. Saarinen entered the name Stina Ruuskanen in the UEFA list for the Nation League game.
The problem: Stina Ruuskanen is as old as Saarinen, namely 51 years, and 29 years ago she made her last international match in the national dress. The trainer actually wanted to call Nanne Ruuskanen to the team. It is also significantly younger at the age of 23.
The older ruuscanes took the confusion with humor. “I am definitely ready when the appointment comes! Only yesterday I played in a hobby league game, so my feeling is good,” she told the Finnish newspaper “Ilta-Sanomat”.
Finland: confusion had consequences
Nevertheless, the confusion had followed. Since the error only noticed after the registration deadline, the traveling nanne was not able to compete for the game. “Naane was informed about the situation on match day when the mistake was discovered,” wrote the Finnish Football Association. Saarinen was annoyed by her mistake: “Of course, Nanne was disappointed, but the news was surprisingly well received under the circumstances. I deeply regret the mistake,” said Saarinen.
After two games in the Nations League, Finland will play a friendly against the Netherlands on June 26 before meets Iceland, Norway and host Switzerland at the European Championship in Group A.
