Schult to EM chances: “Difficult to assess”

Almuth Schult is also one of the top experts in football after her career. She is careful about the EM prospects of the DFB women.

Former goalkeeper Almuth Schult sees the European Championship chances of German footballers. “It is difficult to assess this at the moment. It has been up and off in the past few months, maybe something similar to the men. Ultimately, the results were right,” said the 34-year-old ARD expert of the German Press Agency. “The team has some top players in their ranks, which is why they are one of the favorites for me.”

The DFB women recently clearly beat the Netherlands (4: 0) and Austria (6: 0) in the Nations League, but previously showed fluctuating services under the new national coach Christian Wück.

Schult has Sweden on the note

“Of course, world champion Spain and European champion England are among the favorites. But France, the Netherlands and Germany are also part of it. They have all strong single players,” said Schult. The Olympic champion in 2016 and 66-time international ended her career in March.

According to the ex-Wolfsburg woman, the Swedes are also to be expected: “They showed at the last tournaments that they can play for the medals.”

Sweden is alongside Poland and Denmark of German group opponents at the tournament in Switzerland (July 2 to 27). The DFB women can already meet in the quarter-finals on England or co-favorite France. Wück announced this Thursday (1:00 p.m.) in the Europa-Park Rust the 23-member contingent of the eight-time title winner and Olympic third of 2024.

Berger brings “rest into the game”

Wück’s decision to set Olympic heroine Ann-Katrin Berger (34) from the US Club NY/NJ Gotham in goal can understand Schult. “With all her routine, she brings rest into play,” she said. “And as a goalkeeper, you can’t afford almost any mistakes, so many years of experience is so important in such a tournament.”
