Russell prevails in qualification in Montreal
The Grand Prize of Canada promises tension. With the best prospects for victory, Mercedes driver surprisingly goes in the tenth run of the Formula 1 season.
Mercedes driver George Russell surprisingly goes from the first starting place in the Grand Prix of Canada after a fabulous round. The 27-year-old from Great Britain drove the fastest round in Montreal in the silver arrow in 1: 10.899 minutes and may hope for his first Formula 1 season on Sunday (8:00 p.m./Sky and RTL). Just behind it ended up world champion Max Verstappen in Red Bull in second place, third was the World Cup leader Oscar Piatri in the McLaren.
“The last round was one of the most exciting in my life. I am very, very happy about it,” said Russell, who was 0.160 seconds ahead of Verstappen. However, the defending champion was also not dissatisfied with his appearance. “Let’s see what happens tomorrow. I’m pretty happy with what we did,” said Verstappen.
Hülkenberg benefits from punishment
Nico Hülkenberg, the only German driver in the field, won 13th place. Due to a punishment for Red Bull driver Yuki Tsunoda, the 37-year-old from the Rhineland will start with twelfth place. Hülkenberg surprised in Barcelona two weeks ago and fifth many points for his clean team.
Before the tenth of a total of 24 season runs, the Australian Piatri leads in the overall ranking with a ten points ahead of Stallrival Lando Norris, who was only seventh in qualification. Verstappen is only in third place behind the leader behind the leader. The 27-year-old Dutch had won three times in Quebec in the past three years.
Verstappen must not afford errors
After his crash at the last race in Spain, Verstappen is with special observation. Because he deliberately drove Russell into the car, the four -time champion was also occupied with three penalty points in the sinners. If he only collects one more point, this attracts a racing lock for the next World Cup run in Austria. Verstappen already announced that he was not changing his driving style.
