At Pogacars Gala: Lipowitz ready for a big tour examination

The Slovenian Tadej Pogacar takes course on his fourth tour victory. Cycling Germany can hope for something that has not succeeded since the Ullrich era after the Dauphiné.

Tadej Pogacar drove to the first triumph in the yellow jersey, the German hope of Florian Lipowitz, as the overall press, underpinned his role in the top of the world: At the Dauphiné tour of the cycling professionals, world champion Pogacar underpinned his supremacy almost three weeks before the start of the Tour de France.

Lipowitz: “Never counted on it”

However, the overall victory of the Slovenia before his permanent rival Jonas Vingegaard from Denmark was only limited in Germany. Because the 24 -year -old Lipowitz was so strong in the dress rehearsal that within a few days he developed from a wobbly candidate in his own team to a serious contender on a podium in the overall classification.

“When I came here, I would never have expected that I could drive so far ahead,” said Lipowitz from the Team Red Bull-Bora Hansgrohe. The racing team around Primoz Roglic now has a second high -quality option on the overall classification for the largest bike race in the world (5th to 27th July). Lipowitz was not only third behind Pogacar and Vingegaard, but also won the jersey of the best young professional.

“Superhappy” at the royal stage

Sports director Rolf Aldag was enthusiastic about Lipowitz. “Huge. He has taken another step – it is more stable, is solid, does not make mistakes. He always keeps calm, it is first of all,” said Aldag after the royal stage, which Lipowitz ended in third place on Saturday.

On Sunday, too, he only lost a few seconds to the Belgian Remco Evenepoel on the 133.3 kilometers from Val-d’Arc to Val-Cenis and left it significantly in the overall classification. “I’m super happy with today. The last climb was super hard – I was really happy to be at the finish line. The last three or four kilometers were almost hell,” said Lipowitz about the demanding seventh stage, where he strengthened the podium.

The competition also raves about the young mountain specialist, who has been the first German since the time of Jan Ullrich and Andreas Klöden a tour podium in Paris. “He is an extraordinary driver we have to pay attention to,” said Evenepoel, who finished fourth in the overall classification behind Lipowitz.

Pogacar: Third Dauphiné champion as world champion

On the other hand, no way is to go past world champion Pogacar on the 21 stages between Lille and Paris. The Slovenian is targeting its fourth overall victory at the highlight of the season after 2020, 2021 and 2024. “Pogacar is the clear favorite, the Crown Prince is Jonas Vingegaard,” said Aldag. The Dane won the Tour of France in 2022 and 2023.

After three day victories, Pogacar himself spoke “of a breathtaking week”. When he answered the questions in the target area, he almost looked rested again. The star from Slovenia is only the third cyclist after the Frenchman Louison Bobet (1955) and Bernard Hinault (1981), who also won the Dauphiné as the world champion. “I am very happy and proud,” said Pogacar.
