Comeback at the club World Cup
Rüdiger ticks out again – and accuses opponent of racism
Back around Antonio Rüdiger again. The real star celebrated his comeback at the club World Cup after surviving injury. There were heated scenes again.
Eight weeks after his knee operation, DFB defense chief Antonio Rüdiger was back on the pitch at the club World Cup. In the 3-1 win of Real Madrid against the Mexican club Cl Pachuca, the 32-year-old Rüdiger was substituted for the final minutes. Actually a reason to be happy – but after the final whistle there was an incident, Rüdiger in the middle.
The German international was out of his way and fought a heated word battle with Pachuca player Gustavo Cabral. After a duel shortly before the end, the disputes had occurred. Memorials tried to calm Rüdiger. After the tumult and a brief exchange with referee Ramon Abatti Abel from Brazil, he left the square.
Real coach Xabi Alonso reported after the incident that Rüdiger was racially insulted. “Toni told us something and we believe him.” The FIFA protocol common for such cases was therefore activated. “If something has happened, the corresponding measures are taken,” said Alonso. Racism is “unacceptable. There is no place in football.”
Opponents asserts his innocence
Gustavo Cabral rejected the allegations and asserted that he was misunderstood. The Argentinian called Rüdiger a “coward”. The Spanish word he used for it is only similar to another with a racist undertone. He also explained that to the referee.
His trainer, Jaime Lozano, announced that he wanted to speak with his player. “I’ve known him for a while and have never heard of something like that in connection with Pachuca players,” said Lozano. So far he knows nothing about a possible insult.
Antonio Rüdiger already noticeable before club World Cup
Antonio Rüdiger had noticed in the past due to his startled species. It was only shortly before his knee injury that the national player made a freak out against FC Barcelona at the “El Clásico” and insulted the referee.
